History of Eminonu
The district has a rich history that dates back to the Roman Empire. During the Roman Empire, the area was known as Byzantium and was an important commercial center between Asia and Europe. In 324 AD, Emperor Constantine I declared Byzantium the new capital of the Roman Empire and renamed it Constantinople. Over the next centuries, the city grew in importance and became a cultural and political center of the Byzantine Empire. The district of Eminonu became the main commercial and port area of the city during this period. When the Ottoman Empire conquered Constantinople in 1453, Eminonu remained an important commercial center. The district became the main port connecting the Ottoman Empire with Europe and Asia.
