Burgazada is the third largest of the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara. It has a long history dating back to the Byzantine Era. During the Byzantine period, the island was known as Antigoni and it was an important monastic center. The island was later known as Panormitis and was used as a quarantine station during the Ottoman period. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Burgazada became a popular summer retreat for wealthy Istanbulites, who built ornate mansions and villas on the island. The island's popularity as a summer destination continued throughout the 20th century, and it remains a popular spot for summertime getaways. Burgazada was also a site of importance during the Turkish War of Independence. The island was used as a base by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his forces and was later used as a prison for political prisoners.
